Like a virus…

Most viral videos are categorized by their view counts. I prefer to think of a viral video in terms of who it reaches, and whether or not those viewers are part of your targetted audience.

It’s no secret I make videos for other YouTubers. My videos do not make sense outside of YouTube. Burned to a DVD, I tried showing a few of my videos to my family, and aside from a few chuckles, they just didn’t get them. And that’s okay, I don’t make my videos for forty-year-old accountants and teachers - I make them for tewnty-something online content creators.

By that definition, yesterday’s parody of HBO’s Hooking Up, which I mocked as Selling Out, went viral.

The following are just a few of the places my channel and my video showed up within the last twenty-four hours:

POPTUB: Maria Sansone and crew included Selling Out in their latest “What POPTUB’s Watching” segment. POPTUB reports on YouTube stars, the best viral videos, undiscovered gems, and your favorite celebrities.

Tilzy.tv Woody Tondorf III, creator of HBO’s new online series Hooking Up, sat down for a seven minute interview with tilzy.tv, when asked about advice for newer YouTubers, Woody recommends my channel, by name, as an example of how collaborations can help get your name out there.

YouTubeReviewed The newest kid on the block for reviewing YouTube videos and reporting on (or creating) a little drama, posted a wonderful review piece of Selling Out.

WillVideoForFood Not a full post about the video, but a nice mention, over on nalts’ blog, characterizing my parody as “biting satire”.

blogTV Wrapping up the evening yesterday, I went live on blogTV to discuss HBO’s new show with other YouTubers. During that live show I called Woody, the show’s creator, for a 30 minute Q & A about the show, and my parody of it. Woody said he enjoyed the parody and pointed out that he got his start parodying the OC, and that the irony of now being parodied himself is not lost on him.

Regardless of how the view count ends up on the video, I deem it a success. It reached those I wanted it to (both positively and negatively (anyone follow Bravesgirl5 and PhillyD on Twitter? lol). It was fun to create with achampag, while we were both under the weather. And after it was uploaded, the response could not have been better. Thanks to everyone who has watched and commented.
