YouTube: An Insider's Guide to Climbing the Charts
Written by fallofautumndistro
I am currently writing a book about YouTube for O'Reilly Media, Inc. called YouTube: An Insider's Guide to Climbing the Charts. The book walks you through creating and customizing your account - writing, lighting and shooting your videos - finding and joining the YouTube community - applying for the Partnership Program - getting your videos seen - and much more.

The book features not only my insight (which has earned me almost 3 million total video views), but also interviews with YouTube rock stars LisaNova, WhatTheBuckShow, the vlogbrothers, nalts, the fiveawesomegirls, renetto and even current YouTube staff! YouTube: An Insider's Guide to Climbing the Charts is now available for pre-order at Amazon and Target, and will be available November 21st, 2008.

YouTube Annotations within Videos!
Written by fallofautumndistro
Take a minute to watch out my latest video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=717oxEOfERQ

You may notice numerous pop-up buttons that display over the video as it plays. Each of these buttons is clickable, and are hyperlinked to the various profiles of the people I collabed with.

This is going to be a great new feature for adding interactivity within videos. From "choose your own path" videos to card tricks and beyond. Nice job YouTube.

YouTube Goes High(er) Def.
Written by fallofautumndistro
As of last night (March 11th), select YouTube videos are being offered in two resolutions; a lower-quality version for dial-up users and a higher-quality version for DSL/Cable users. The lower-quality version is the same codec YouTube’s been encoding at for years.

As YouTube is being offered on devices beyond your computer screen, such as the AppleTV receiver, higher-resolution videos are needed for playback on your television set, not to mention they’re just nicer to look at on your desktop as well.

One, possibly on-purpose drawback, however; YouTube doesn’t remember your higher or lower preference from video-to-video. This means you’ll have to click on “Watch this video in higher quality” every time you watch a video, effectively doubling views for YouTube.

Nalts says you have NO TALENT...
Written by fallofautumndistro
Image...but he claims he can still make you popular on YouTube.

How to Become Popular on YouTube Without Any Talent is a brand new, free eBook by YouTubelebrity Kevin Nalts. The title is obviously a little tongue-in-cheek, as is everything Nalts produces, but the actual content contains many truths of marketing yourself and your online videos.

How to Become Popular on YouTube Without Any Talent (click title to download the free ebook) covers not only the steps to take as a new YouTuber, but also the things to keep in mind to hold on to the audience you gain as time goes on. Most of the advice sounds fairly practical, but they're all lessons we forget from time-to-time, or things newbies don't seem to understand.

Like his YouTube videos, Nalts' first publication here is free as a digital download. I expect a peppering of people wanting their half hour back after reading his ebook, but the rest will already be off implementing Nalts' suggestions and actually being productive...

Nerds Take Over Youtube for Charity
Written by John and Hank Green
ImageOn December 17th and 18th, many of the most popular channels on youtube are taking over prominent pages of youtube to raise money for charity while celebrating nerdiness in an event being called "The Nerdfighter Power Initiative."

Participants include the two most popular daily channels on youtube, "What the Buck" and "The Philip DeFranco Show," as well as Charlieissocoollike, DaveDays, Fallofautumndistro, Nalts and others. All told, the participants' videos have been viewed more than 50 million times, making this project among the farthest-reach among youtube users in the site's history.

The Day the Categories Died
Written by fallofautumndistro
In case you haven't noticed yet, YouTube removed the Categories page this morning. I lobbied against this when YouTube first previewed their new design. Category Features were a great way for smaller channels to gain some exposure. It was also fun to browse when I was bored.

I'm happy to see they added a spotlighted box to the top of the new Videos page, this was a recommendation of mine in both my blog and a lengthy email I sent to YouTube the day the Preview went up.

But I think it's going to be harder and harder for those of us who aren't superstars yet to grow any kind of audience now.

RIP Categories Page.

YouTube Partner Program Expands!
Written by fallofautumndistro
YouTube announced today that the Partner Program is now open-enrollment. This means any YouTuber can apply to be a Partner, and no longer have to wait to be invited. I was made a Partner just under a month ago. The YouTube Partner Program shares ad revenue with original content (video) creators. George, the person in charge of the Partner Program, contacted me and asked if he could use a clip from my parody video "Fappy" in the official announcement video. You can watch that announcement video below, or you can CLICK HERE TO APPLY right now for the Partner Program.

How To Cheat on YouTube, Part 1: More Views
Written by fallofautumndistro
ImageI read an article a few days ago on TechCrunch.com about how to cheat your way to the top on YouTube. The article "revealed" some of the more fruitless forms of gaming the YouTube system.

The TechCrunch article most prominently focused on auto-refreshing. Auto-refreshing is when you install a plug-in that automatically refreshes your video page at a set interval of time. Let’s say you set it to refresh every five seconds. This means you’ll get twelve views every minute or 720 new views every hour. And you can leave this plug-in running in a background tab while you continue to surf.

Sure, auto-refreshing will help you move up the Most Viewed (Today) list on YouTube (and it’s not a new practice, a number of current YouTube Partners have admitted to auto-refreshing their own videos in the past), but these are all empty views. Most of us who invest the time that we do into creating online video content would prefer ten actual views to a hundred "fake" views any day. For most of us, the goal is to share our vision, our voice, or our thoughts with an interactive audience.

So, how do we obtain this audience, honestly, and without "cheating"?

Listen to Trippy… Viral Video Fever Review
Written by fallofautumndistro
ImageThe promotional jingle, a collaboration video, has just the right ratio of campy to catchy. Charles Trippy, one of the Most Subscribed Comedians of all-time on YouTube, used the very tips he is offering in Viral Video Fever to market the product itself. Viral Video Fever is a three DVD set that attempts to cover every aspect of making and promoting online videos.

In Viral Video Fever, Trippy begins by walking viewers through the basics; recording media formats, lighting and shot composition. If you’ve produced more than half a dozen videos already, you’ve probably picked up most of this information along the way and this section might not be incredibly helpful. But, a short refresher course can be good for all of us occasionally.
